Years ago I had the unenviable privilege of being a human crash test dummy. And although most crash test cases are done at about 35mph, I was not so lucky.
I was traveling on I-5 through Orange county when a young man in a Honda Acura decided it would be a good idea to speed over 100mph while the rest of us were going 65mph on a busy highway. Unfortunately, this situation caused several vehicles to lose control and crash into each other. One of the vehicles in question was a large SUV, that somehow started traveling in a direction perpendicular to the highway, crossing in front of me horizontally and hitting the front corner of my car (passenger side).

Breaking for my life, I slowed down from 65mph, perhaps 10 or 20mph, before I t-boned the SUV. Upon being hit, the SUV spun around my car, hitting me on the driver’s side. The only bright side here is that the impact with my vehicle stopped the SUV from continuing it’s travel towards the cement divider, which would have been much harder than my vehicle.

Once all the crashing was done, I sat dazed in my car, thankful that I was still alive. I had no broken bones, not even my foot, which is frequently injured when frontal crash impact is transferred to the foot on the brake pedal. Eventually the ambulance came and took away the passenger in the back of the SUV. I didn’t need an ambulance and my car was still driveable, but police insisted it be towed. Five or six vehicles were involved in the crash so a large investigation was required.
A man came up to me and asked me, “So, are you going to buy an SUV now?” I looked at the ambulance taking away the poor passenger in the SUV and said, “Nope, I’m going to buy another Prius!”
And I’ve never regretted it for a minute!
