Tiny chairs for the tiny Prius

You don’t need a lot of gear when you travel, especially things like tables and chairs. If you’re actually living out of a Prius you might want to buy a small, lightweight camp kitchen, but for camping or travel you can get by without it. But if you plan to do a lot of walking or hiking, a chair can be nice. And if you happen to be small like me, a tiny chair can satisfy this requirement.

Usually I travel alone, but on a camping trip with friends in Michigan, I discovered that it would be really useful to have a chair that I could put around the campfire to socialize with friends. The next day I drove out to the nearby Walmart and got a small camping chair that wouldn’t take up much room in my car. To my surprise, it became an instant hit and everyone wanted a photo of it.

The baby pink chair became my signature photo prop and I began to take it everywhere. Eventually I even took it on a road trip to a bunch of national parks as I crossed the country.

As a photographer who’s used to being behind the lens, I can be self conscious about photos of myself up close, and I’m very picky about light and shadow on faces, including mine. Fortunately, most people can shoot a landscape without problems if you set the camera up for them in advance. The baby pink chair helps me to frame the photo the way I want, so all I have to do once I find a friendly stranger to take my picture is to hand them my camera, and then go sit in the chair.

I’m sure you can do the same with a bigger chair, and they don’t take up too much room, but the tiny chair feels more fun so I’m sticking with it.

Happy travels!
